Commissioned by The Model as part of model::offsite programme,
Relay is an online music project I devised and have been curating
since early 2008. Relay website
here.
The idea is to create a chain or collection of music pieces by
Irish and international artists where each work is directly influenced
by the one before, creating an open ended but linear, conversation
of ideas. On finishing their work each artist is asked to gather
a cluster of sounds from their track for the next participant
who is free to include them or not. Some responses are purely
conceptual. The project will continue indefinitely and all works
are available to listen to, and download, for free
here.
It
will have its first physical existence for DEAF09 as an installation
at FilmBase. There are eight Relay works so far, from Chequerboard,
Jimmy Behan, Loscil, Hulk, Polly Fibre, Pierre Bastien, Bibio
and Sunken Foal. Each piece will have it’s own listening
station so the listener can move from one response to the next,
following the threads of the conversation.

Prince August & the Ishiyama Excursion

Heres the new piece by Swedish video artist Stefan Larsson
called 'The Ishiyama Excursion' featuring the Chequerboard track
'Prince August'. View
here.
I initially contacted Stefan last christmas about a video piece
of his that I fell in love with called 'Yuki' which uses the
music 'One sunny cloudy day' by Christ and depicts two hooded
figures stumbling around in the snow mirroring the movements
of an electronic tree. I must have watched it solidly for a day.
Here it is...
Anyhow while discussing 'Yuki' and exchanging thoughts Stefan
became interested in using a track of mine called 'Prince August'
as an inspiration for his next piece so I've had the very humbling
experience of being sent test runs and first looks at this latest
piece. Heres a few words from Stefan on the piece too which was
shot in Japan over a four month period and includes Stefans trademark
crossbreed naturebots as I like to think of them. In his own
words...
" The video features third incarnation AUJIK artifacts
at an excursion at the Ishiyama dera in Japan. The artifacts
are superfluous products generated in the crossbreed of human
and technical evolution. They are in a state between resignation
and euphoria,incapable of expressing themselves.
The Ishiyama dera is a sacred Buddhist area and is most famous
because of the novelist Murasaki Shikibu who wrote "The
Tale of Genji"(the worlds first novel) there. Also Ukiyo-E
artist Ando Hiroshige portrayed Ishiyama dera in his "The
Famous Views of 60-Odd Provinces".

Who's a Boldypants?

A long long time ago in a musical galaxy far far away I did
up some t shirts called 'Who's a Boldypants', for the launch
night of the debut Chequerboard album 'Gothica' in Dame Lane,
Dublin. The t shirts were based on an unfortunate fink
character that featured
in the comic book that went with the album. As it
happened on the night I sold more t shirts than
albums and in the months and years after, people often asked
me wether they'd be available again.
Well in gloriously sloathish style and after a few false starts
its taken 7 years to finally get round to printing the tees,
building the website, making some Boldypants tunes and housing
it all at www.boldypants.com.

The t shirts are the original 'Who's a Boldypants' design in
a wide range of colours and sizes with two other designs available,
those being the autobiographically titled ' Unrealistic Plans'
and ' Emotional Wreckingball coming through'. The latter title
also has a free mp3 to go with it which you can download for free
from the download section of the site.
So here it is :www.boldypants.com.
Enjoy, pass it on, J |
